Perplexity and progress

Malcolm Clark

pp. 173-191

Abstract

Descartes turned the attention of philosophers to the question "where to begin". Though the question has been regarded as basic in rationalist and idealist schools, it is not much in vogue today. Where the philosopher's task is looked upon as one of description, particular interests and current disputes usually provide the topic. No "beginning" stands out as privileged, and the search for one reminds us of preoccupations that have long since been discredited.
