Welfare and bodily order
theorizing transitions in corporeal discourse
pp. 1-22
Abstract
This chapter will use the fourfold taxonomy of bodily order developed by Bryan Turner (1996) as a framework for discussing the corporeal discourses of welfare with which this book is concerned. The first section outlines Turner's approach and its relevance to social policy analysis. Subsequent sections deal in turn with each of the three discourses already outlined by Hartley Dean in the Introduction to this volume, namely "physical efficiency", 'social efficiency" and "the independent body", and link them to the shifts in welfare capitalism with which they are associated.
